Kingfishers

Welcome to Kingfishers 2022/23

Kingfisher class had another fantastic half-term and the Arctic Adventure topic proved to be very popular! The children found out about the geography of both polar regions and made comparisons between the Arctic and the Antarctic. They researched which animals are able to survive in those environments and why most living things cannot. They found out how animals and people have adapted to survival in the harsh living conditions. Everyone enjoyed investigating ice and finding different ways to try to stop it from melting!

In maths, the children became very proficient using money to make totals and find change.  Everyone is becoming more confident solving worded maths problems, included those which have more than one step. We started to explore the number operations of multiplication and division too.

Kingfishers always enjoy art activities and this half-term they studied the artist Paul Klee and produced their own pieces in his style, which looked amazing!  In computing, the children practised their photographing skills, using different tools and making edits.

In English, the children studied the text 'Lost and Found' and planned and wrote their own fantastic Arctic adventure stories. Our focus then turned to explanation texts and the children learnt how to explain clearly, using a wide vocabulary and including lots of relevant detail.  The children continue to develop their reading fluency, stamina, confidence and comprehension skills. Punctuation, grammar and spelling also continue to be a focus.

In PSHE, we explored the concept of 'friendship' and thought about what makes a good friend and how to resolve problems and conflicts.

Overall, the children in Kingfisher class enjoyed a half-term full of learning, fun and opportunity!
